While the Tube Screamer went for symmetrical clipping, Boss innovated with asymmetrical clipping in the OD-1, which gave a crunchier, more amp-like tone. This became the DNA for later Boss classics: the SD-1 Super OverDrive (still in production), BD-2 Blues Driver, and countless modded versions by Keeley and Analogman. The OD-1’s compact form factor and Boss’s sturdy design also cemented the modern pedalboard format. Nearly every player who’s owned a Boss pedal has played something descended from the OD-1.
